Mulch is sold two ways. Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard and delivered loose or picked up in a truck bed. Bagged mulch is sold in 2 cubic foot bags at almost every garden center and home improvement store, with 3 cubic foot bags available for some products. Since a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, one cubic yard equals 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet.
That single conversion is the backbone of every mulch estimate. Calculate the volume in cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, or divide by 2 for the number of standard bags.
Depth in inches must be converted to feet first. Three inches is 0.25 feet, not 3.
A Worked Example: A 30 ft by 8 ft Bed at 3 Inches
Take a foundation bed 30 feet long and 8 feet deep, mulched to 3 inches.
- Area: 30 x 8 equals 240 square feet.
- Convert depth: 3 divided by 12 equals 0.25 feet.
- Volume: 240 x 0.25 equals 60 cubic feet.
- Cubic yards: 60 divided by 27 equals 2.22 cubic yards.
- Bags: 60 divided by 2 equals 30 bags of 2 cubic feet.
Thirty bags is roughly two full pickup loads, and 2.22 cubic yards is a single small bulk delivery. That contrast is the whole bulk versus bagged decision in one example.
For irregular beds, break the shape into rectangles and circles rather than guessing an average. A circular bed is 3.1416 x radius in feet squared. A curved border can usually be treated as a rectangle using the average width along its length, which is accurate enough for mulch.
Coverage at a Glance
Those figures let any estimate be checked in seconds. A 500 square foot bed at 3 inches needs about 4.6 cubic yards, or about 62 bags. If a calculator disagrees badly with that, the depth conversion is usually the reason.
How Deep Should Mulch Be?
- 2 to 3 inches: the general purpose depth for most established beds, shrubs and foundation plantings. Deep enough to hold moisture and slow weeds, shallow enough to let air and water reach the soil.
- 3 to 4 inches: for weed suppression in open beds and along borders where light needs to be blocked completely. Use the upper end with coarse, chunky mulch that stacks loosely.
- 1 to 2 inches: around shallow rooted plants such as azaleas, rhododendrons, hostas, ferns and most annuals, and over any area where feeder roots run close to the surface.
Fine textured mulch such as double shredded hardwood packs tighter than coarse bark nuggets, so the same 3 inches of each behaves differently. Fine mulch at 4 inches can mat and shed water rather than absorb it. Coarse mulch at 4 inches stays open and drains freely.
Topping up an existing bed
Beds that already carry 2 inches of partly broken down mulch do not need a full new layer. Measure what is there, subtract it from the target depth, and order the difference. Adding a full 3 inches every spring onto an undisturbed bed builds up a thick, water shedding mat within a few years. Rake and loosen the existing layer before topping up.
When to Mulch
Mid to late spring is the main application window, once the soil has warmed. Mulching too early over cold soil keeps it cold and delays root growth. A second lighter application in late fall, after the ground has cooled but before it freezes hard, insulates roots through winter freeze and thaw cycles, which is what heaves shallow rooted perennials out of the ground.
Straw and other seasonal mulches in vegetable gardens follow the crop rather than the calendar, going down once seedlings are established and coming off or being turned in at the end of the season.
Mulch Types Compared
Organic mulches break down and feed the soil, which is why they need replacing. Rubber mulch does not break down, does not improve soil, holds heat and is difficult to remove once mixed with leaf litter. It suits play areas and paths rather than planting beds.
The Volcano Mulching Mistake
Piling mulch into a cone against a tree trunk is the most common and most damaging mulching error in American landscapes. Bark is not root tissue and is not built to sit wet. Constant moisture against the trunk softens it, invites decay fungi and gives rodents cover to chew through the bark at ground level. Trees also respond by growing roots up into the mulch pile, which then circle the trunk and slowly strangle the tree years later.
Mulch should be spread in a flat, wide ring, not a mound. Keep it 3 to 6 inches clear of the trunk so the root flare, the point where the trunk widens into the roots, stays visible. Extend the ring out toward the drip line if space allows, since the wide, shallow ring is what actually benefits the tree.
Bulk or Bagged?
The crossover usually falls around 6 to 8 bags. Below that, bags are easier and cheaper overall: no delivery fee, no minimum order, no pile on the driveway, and leftovers stack in the garage. Above that, bulk generally costs less per cubic foot even after delivery, and the price gap widens fast at 2 or more cubic yards.
Bulk has practical requirements. A truck needs somewhere to dump, the pile needs moving by wheelbarrow, and most suppliers set a minimum order of 1 to 3 cubic yards. Bagged mulch fits in a car, can be bought in stages, and is easier for small or scattered beds. One cubic yard of hardwood mulch weighs roughly 400 to 800 pounds depending on moisture, so a half ton pickup handles 1 to 2 yards comfortably.
Color Fading and Dyed Mulch
Dyed black, brown and red mulches are colored with iron oxide or carbon based dyes sprayed onto shredded wood. The color holds best in the first season and fades under UV exposure, usually noticeably by the end of the first summer and clearly by the second. Fading is a cosmetic issue, not a sign the mulch has failed, and a light top dressing restores the look without adding a full new layer.
Undyed hardwood and bark mulches gray out as they weather, which many people prefer. If color retention matters, cedar and cypress hold their natural tone longer than plain hardwood.
Water Retention and Weed Suppression
Mulch works by covering the soil. A 2 to 3 inch layer cuts evaporation from the soil surface substantially, moderates soil temperature swings and stops rain from compacting bare soil into a crust. Those effects come almost entirely from the first 2 inches. Depth beyond about 4 inches adds little moisture benefit and starts causing problems.
Weed suppression is different, and depth matters more. Weed seeds need light, so the layer has to be thick enough to block it, which is why 3 to 4 inches is the recommendation where weeds are the main concern. What mulch cannot do is stop established perennial weeds. Those push through any depth and need removing first. Seeds that blow in and land on top of the mulch will also germinate in the mulch itself, which is why light annual top dressing and occasional hand pulling remain part of the job.
